New chapter opens for training specialist following major investment

A specialist group of training companies is on the path to further growth, thanks to a major new investment.

Fund management company FW Capital has invested £750,000 in PTM Group, whose companies deliver vocational training through government funded apprenticeships and traineeships, alongside higher level taught qualifications for upskilling and re-training.

FW Capital was supported on the deal by Newcastle-headquartered law firm Watson Burton, which managed the legal aspects of the project and provided advice on the investment documentation. The Watson Burton team was led by corporate specialist Paul Wigham, partner at the firm.

PTM Group, which is based in Newcastle upon Tyne, is one of the fastest growing businesses in its sector, with record growth year on year for the past three years and revenue expected to surpass £10 million in the next 18 months.

The investment from FW Capital will help the business to grow through the employment of new staff and the expansion of its offices.

PTM Group includes: NCT Skills, which provides apprentices to employers in the construction sector; 180 Training, which focuses on engaging with adults who want to re-train; Winnovation Training, which offers more than 100 social care and health courses; The JEF-CEP, a Joint Enterprise between the British Army & NCT Skills For Life which delivers an introduction to the construction industry; and The Academy of Sound and Vision, which provides opportunities for young people in music event logistics.

Watson Burton, which has offices in Leeds and London as well as the North East, has significant experience of supporting funders on major investments, and has worked with FW Capital for more than five years.

PTM Group was supported by Newcastle-based TIG Corporate Finance, which acted as the company’s corporate finance advisor on the investment.

Paul Wigham, partner at Watson Burton, said: “We have built up an excellent relationship with FW Capital, a company which has supported a large number of innovative, forward-thinking businesses in the North East and beyond with significant funding. We were therefore delighted to provide legal services to FW Capital in its investment in PTM Group, a group of companies which is set to become a powerhouse in the education and training sector – and whose services already make a huge difference to learners throughout the UK.

“Our corporate team have wide-ranging experience and capabilities in dealing with major investments and we’re pleased to have helped this deal reach a successful outcome.”

Jamie Paterson, managing director of PTM Group, said: “The investment from FW Capital will help the business to continue its high growth trajectory in a sustainable way. FW Capital has really worked well with us to ensure that the investment was for the right amount and one that was sensible for us as a business.

“Over the next two years our aim is to be delivering qualifications to 2000 people per year throughout the UK and this investment will play a key part in supporting PTM Group in reaching this goal.”

Michael Vassallo, senior investment executive at FW Capital, added: “PTM Group has demonstrated its strength in the training sector over the past three years and has established itself as a highly respected provider that is very much in tune with the needs of today’s employers and learners.

“It has been a real pleasure to work with Jamie and the team on this investment and to be supporting PTM Group in the next stage of its development.
